The main focus of research at the Institute of Building and Energy Systems is on the areas of energy and climate. In this, the institute sees itself as a partner of industry, business and local authorities – and, at the same time, as a teaching platform. The students, in particular those in the Building Climate master's programme, take part in work on actual research projects. The primary task of the interdisciplinary institute is thus the practical scientific training of the students; the topics range from conceptual issues and research and development work to special expert opinions.

The institute has several areas of expertise, with the corresponding laboratories.

The experts and laboratories of the IGE are also available for outside research, development and service contracts.
