Institute for GEO AND ENVIRONMENT / IGU

Geotechnics- Geology / Hydrogeology – Geoinformation - Surveying - Urban Water Management - Hydraulic Engineering

The effective protection of our natural basic life resources is the huge challenge of our times!

The objective of the Institute of GEO AND ENVIRONMENT (IGU) is to develop and apply innovative quality assurance measures using an engineer´s perspective within the framework of research projects, in particular for the areas of water, soil and rock.

The Institute has experts from the fields of geotechnics, geology/hydrogeology, geoinformation, surveying, urban water management and hydraulic engineering with the respective staff and laboratories, which ensures a high competence in solving problems through interdisciplinary cooperation. The spectrum of research and development activities ranges from quality assurance for drinking water extraction areas to planning and developing state-of-art wastewater treatment plants and new control and improvement methods for soil and rock. In addition to this, a wide variety of services is offered by the participating laboratories and the integrated testing laboratories for geotechnics and water.

In the context of the university´s educational mandate, the institute is available for the professional training of the students and offers the possibility of completing diploma, bachelor´s and master´s theses in the context of projects in practical research, sometimes across disciplines.
