This affects Civil Engineering as well a society.

Society and Civil Engineers

Constructions are one of the most important foundations of human civilisation and nobody seems to be puzzled that men started so early with it.

The main part of building or contruction activities is done and strongly influenced by civil engineers.

However, the capacities of former "building masters" were essentially based on intuition and a lot of things were only just "tried out". Today, a civil engineer can rely on scientific results and mathematical foundations. Nowadays, he has to abstract complexe domains and tasks, has to consider models and to analyze them, before transferring his results to the practical job!

This "thinking as an engineer" is a continous take up of new challenges. The required job profile of a civil engineer consists for the main part in a large professionnal knowledge, whose foundations are acquired during studies. The civil engineer gets more know-how thanks to practical work and continous formation.

The civil engineer is more involved than most other people in the active conception
of our environment - nowadays and in the future. He reacts permanently on the needs of society and opens new fields of activities. Besides planning, construction and realisation of new constructions renovation and conservation of precious building heritage, recycling of building materials and - last but not least the protection of our environment becomes more and more important for civil engineers.

All this connects the civil engineer with society in the past, today and in the future!
