Internship

The main study period follows the internship, which is accompanied throughout by a seminar at the university. The internship which takes 6 months enables the students to receive a broad insight in practical work experience such as in engineering agencies, companies of Technical Building Services, Front building, in Facility Management or in public administration.

1. goals

The 5th semester during the studies of building climate is accomplished as a semester of practical work experience. It consists of a traineeship in a company an two practice-related seminars at the university. During the practice-based semester the student experiences the planning and realisation of Technical Building Equipmennt, Building climate and Facility Mangement with all its content and interactions. He is to get to know the circle of people being involved in the process of planning and building and practises the work as a member of a team.

2. accomplishment of the internship

The internship can be accomplished in engineering agencies, Front-building, in the field of Facility Management, in appropriate institutes, in plant construction as well as in the public administration. When accomplishing the internship abroad the student receives another 4 credit points.

During the internship the student is to learn about planning and practise in several of the following fields:

• planning electronics
• energy management
• energy planning
• energy distribution
• energy conversion
• Facility Management
• Front planning
• conveyor techniques
• refurbishment of building
• heating installation
• technical climate
• planning lights
  
• ventilation technology
• measuring and checking
• MSR-technique
• regenerative energies
• sanitarian planning
• use of daylight

The internship has to be documented by a report, which describes the duration of the training, the content of work and the relation to the practise and the extent of the own activity. This report has to be confirmed by the supervising tutor in the company and handed in to the internship office/secretary at the end of the 5th semester. The activties during the semester have to be documented in chronological order.

The acceptance of the report and the successful participation in the attendent seminars in the 5th semester are a requirement for the admission to the 6th semester.
When accomplishing the internship abroad, the attendent seminars can be replaced by appropriate study performances. These performances will be set by the head of the internship office.

The duration of the internship lasts (deducting absenteeism, illness and vacation) 90 days in the job.
The daily presence corresponds with the regular working hours of the company.

A five-day block course takes place at the university before and/or at the end of the internship.
In exceptional cases (such as a semester abroad) one can do the block course alternitavely in the 6th semester.

During the internship, the students will be supervised by qualified members of the company.
The university, especially the mentoring professor aspires to visit the student and the supervisor in the company.

The head of the internship office as well as the professors of the department building climate, will be there for the students in terms of formal questions and advice.

Among the two parties, the student and the chosen company, a contract will be closed. One can find a form at the university for this matter. When receiving an agreement of the head of the internship office it is also allowed to use an company-own form. The contract will be handed in at the internship office as a copy.

The student receives a job reference in which the employee states explicitly the period of time of activity, the work content and the estimation of the students skills and motivation.

Short-term internships (less than 90 days) in a company are only allowed in exceptional cases and when the head of the internship office approves it.
