Prerequisite: Basic knowledge in Organic chemistry and natural products.

Objectives (Learning Outcome): Students who have successfully completed this module

  • have knowledge of the most important methods of organic-preparative chemistry in connection with the synthesis of natural substances
  • can apply preparative unit operations of organic chemistry in the laboratory
  • know the most important reaction mechanisms of organic chemistry
  • are in the able to process and chemically modify natural substances
  • know current trends in the biotechnological industry
  • can explain the concept of the biorefinery
  • can interpret current reports from industrial biotechnology

Lecture topics (content): 

  • Teaching of classic separation methods in the laboratory (recrystallization, extraction, suction, distillation)
  • Characterization of organic compounds via melting point, refractive index, IR spectra, HPLC and GC separation
  • Preparative synthetic methods, basic reaction types: Substitution, addition, elimination, CH-acidic reactions on selected compound classes, creation of a literature preparation
  • Organic reactions with renewable raw materials (vegetable oils, cellulose digestion)
