Process Development / Scale Up (Laboratory)

Component code / course code:

Semester: summer

ECTS credits: 5

Lecture hours per week (SWS): 4

Lecturer: Prof. Dr. Heike Frühwirth, Britta Schwartze

Course language: English

Prerequisite: Recommendation: Pre-knowledge in process engineering, technical microbiology, mathematics and statistics, practical course in process engineering, practical course in technical microbiology.

Objectives (Learning Outcome): Students participating in that course,

  • are able to use measurement data obtained in the laboratory for the mathematical description of the processed basic operations
  • have the ability to investigate complex biotechnological issues experimentally in small, project-oriented groups and to incorporate the knowledge gained into a system scale-up.

Lecture topics (content):

  • Process development: Independent pursuit of a task from the definition of the topic to the rough draft of an industrial plant
  • Experimental development of biotechnological processes: project plan, laboratory protocol, results
  • Creation of project documentation, block flow diagram, material flow table
  • Technology mapping
  • Outlook on industrial implementation

Teaching format (e.g. online/in person lecture/Seminar/Lab etc.): Laboratory, practical training

Examination: Written paper and presentation
